I am Thundercraft5, a former bureaucrat, admin, and currently a code editor for the Hypixel SkyBlock Wiki and a long-time contributor. I am pleased to announce on behalf of the wiki that we have officially migrated off of Fandom.
TLDR: After years of community complaints regarding Fandom's excessive ads and declining user experience, the Hypixel SkyBlock Wiki has finally migrated to an independent hosting platform. We are joining the same independent infrastructure that powers the Minecraft Wiki, RuneScape Wiki, and GTA Wiki. This move grants our team full autonomy over the site’s design and performance, effectively stripping away intrusive ads and corporate bloat. While we are still polishing up the final loose nuts and bolts, the new site is fully functional and significantly faster.
Why the move?
This is a long story, but to sum it up it is because Fandom is a terrible platform. Fandom has long been notorious for slow load times, exploitative practices towards the community, and worst of all ads, ads, ads everywhere. Fandom in the past 12 months has further degraded in terms of both platform and staff quality from an already abysmal state. These degradations include pushing unwanted and unneeded features like "Quick Answers" and "Saved Articles", the sudden firing of a good portion of long-term staff (some of them with multi-year tenure), and discontinuation of community volunteer programs.
"Quick Answers" is an AI-generated FAQ-style question and answers list which is intended to quickly summarize common information on-demand to improve SEO rankings. This feature was introduced to the platform globally without community input, consent, or even the ability to control the contents of these answers initially. These answers are often inaccurate and contain misinformation, these errors are especially prone to happen with data-heavy games like SkyBlock. While Fandom's later added the ability to change these answers, it was only done so after significant protest from the community.
Aside from these recent developments there are long-term problems which motivated the fork such as the inability to customize our site and lack of control over the core layout. Fandom's distracting branding takes up a significant portion of screen real estate and contributes nothing meaningful to the average SkyBlock player such as you. We could not in any way interfere with the displaying of Fandom's copious advertisements above, beside, and inside the article.
What does this mean for me?
If you're just a regular SkyBlock Wiki reader, then you're in for a real treat as we have totally overhauled the wiki's look and feel, tuned up performance, and expanded the page layout! There are first of all no useless travel ads taking up half the page when you're just trying to opening up the page on Attribute Shards. The look and feel of the wiki has been updated for a more modern feel, we have switched from the ugly Fandom layout to a more conventional wiki layout where the article takes up the entire page. We have also entirely removed the right rail.
On Fandom, we had extremely poor control over the mobile interface and this hindered custom features like item tooltips, but we can now do that on mobile! Best of all, there have been many backend performance improvements made to the wiki's code so that large pages like Enchantments load much faster, from 10 seconds down to 5 or 4 seconds!
What you need to do next
The hard part is over now that we have moved. Now we just need to get the community on board.
1. Update your bookmarks: Please abandon the old Fandom link and update your browser to point directly to our new domain at https://hypixelskyblock.minecraft.wiki .
2. Spread the word: Remind your friends, your guild members, and anyone else you know that the Fandom site is officially outdated and no longer supported by the active editing community. Share the link to the new wiki everywhere! Post on reddit, discord, the forums — anywhere is good!
3. Report bugs on Discord: While we have polished up most of the site, a massive migration always leaves a few loose nuts and bolts. 4. Install Indie Wiki Buddy: Install the Indie Wiki Buddy extension, which removes the old Fandom wiki from web search results and redirects you to the new wiki if you click on a link to the old wiki!
